Strategy - what are we going to tell the world about your business?
MODULE ONE - LESSON FOUR GET STARTEDMODULE ONE – LESSON FOUR
In this lesson we look at how you are different from everyone else out there.
Still at the coffee shop with your long-lost friend…
They lean in and say:
“Cool! But isn’t there already a bunch of people doing that?”
Ouch. But fair.
Because your potential customers are thinking the same thing. That’s why your angle matters. What makes you different? This could be called a USP — Unique Selling Proposition — but nowadays it’s much more than that. It’s your edge, your super power. The reason your customers pick you.
Think about:
-
Do you offer something others don’t?
-
Is your service faster? More personal? More honest?
-
Do you work with a specific niche?
Now a lot of people come back to me and say “I’m the best”. And I age a year every time I hear that. You need to be more specific than that, why are you the best? The same applies for customer service, “I offer the best customer service”. Yawn. That’s what EVERYONE says.
Be bold. Be different. Win.
This is possibly the most important lesson of the whole course. If you have an angle, your marketing spend doesn’t need to be huge to win. If you don’t pick an angle then I hope you have a marketing budget the size of Tesco’s bank balance.
YOUR NEXT STEPS
Here’s your challenge for today:
Make a list of one or two points why you’re different – and make sure you can back it up.
-
Examples include
-
“I’m a plumber that specialises in installing bathrooms”
-
“I’m a web designer who can build a website in a week”
-
“I’m a builder who turns up when they say they will”.
-
Easy right? Let’s get to it.
