Strategy - what are we going to tell the world about your business?
MODULE ONE - LESSON THREE GET STARTEDMODULE ONE – LESSON THREE
In this lesson we look at what your business does and how you define that
So your new, old friend has insisted on a ‘catch up over coffee’ so you’re sat in a stuffy coffee shop on a warm, sunny day. And just when you think it can’t get any worse, your our old friend stirs their coffee and asks:
“So what does your business do?”
This is where most people ramble. Or give a fluffy answer. Or say something so broad it could describe 1,000 businesses.
Let’s fix that.
Your answer should be short, clear, and specific. For example:
“I own an online & high street sports shop.”
What we don’t want is something so short it doesn’t help market your business. For example:
“I own a shop.”
Nor do we want War & Peace. For example:
“So I actually started off in 1987 as a sports shop but in 1989, or was it 1990, I found I really liked boxing, so I decided to make it into a sports shop that specialises in boxing”.
YOUR NEXT STEPS
Here’s your challenge for today:
Write a one-sentence description of what you do.
-
Cut the fluff
-
Make it easy to understand
-
Imagine you only had 10 seconds to make it stick
IN THE NEXT LESSON
